How Mega Millions works today
A Mega Millions ticket costs $5. You choose five numbers from 1 to 70 and one gold Mega Ball from 1 to 24, or take a random Quick Pick. Drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11:00 PM Eastern, and the game is played in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Every ticket now includes a built-in multiplier — there is no separate add-on to buy. Before each drawing a multiplier of 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 is selected at random, and it multiplies any non-jackpot prize you win. That is why the smallest Mega Ball-only prize is never less than $10, and a Match 5 pays between $2 million and $10 million depending on the multiplier.
What changed in April 2025
On April 8, 2025, Mega Millions had its first overhaul in years. The ticket price rose from $2 to $5. The Mega Ball pool shrank from 25 numbers to 24, which slightly improved the jackpot odds to 1 in 290,472,336. The optional $1 Megaplier was retired and replaced by the built-in multiplier that now comes on every ticket, with a new top value of 10x.
This matters for the data on this page. Drawings before April 2025 could include a Mega Ball of 25, so you will still see 25 in the Mega Ball heatmap — it was legitimately drawn during the old format and we keep that history intact. Since the change, the Mega Ball has only gone up to 24. The white-ball pool (1 to 70) was not affected, so those frequencies carry straight through both eras.
What number frequency does and does not tell you
Every Mega Millions drawing is independent. The machine has no memory of past results, so a number that has been drawn often is not "hot" in any predictive sense, and a number that has been absent for a while is not "due." Over hundreds of drawings, the small gaps between how often each number lands are exactly what randomness produces.

Every number is sorted into one of eight heat tiers, from Super Hot to Cold, based on how far its draw count sits from the average — measured in standard deviations, not just a raw ranking.
